“Chinese neuroscientists’ work on early COVID-19 vaccine patent a smoking gun in probe of cover-up”
Federal investigators probing the origins of COVID-19 are scrutinizing a series of unusual developments in early 2020 that suggest Chinese scientists may have had knowledge of the virus’s neurological effects well before those symptoms were widely recognized by the global medical community. This new line of inquiry is now a central element in a broader investigation into whether key early information about the virus was withheld or deliberately obscured.
Early Patent Filing and Military Ties
One focal point is a Chinese patent for a COVID-19 vaccine filed on February 24, 2020—barely a month after the first confirmed COVID-19 case was reported in the United States and just weeks before the World Health Organization declared the outbreak a global pandemic. The patent was submitted by entities within China’s Academy of Military Sciences, including the Institute of Military Medicine and the Institute of Microbe Epidemy.
Eleven Chinese researchers were listed on the patent, including Zhou Yusen, a prominent military scientist who had previously collaborated with the Wuhan Institute of Virology and developed vaccines for SARS and MERS. Of particular note to investigators are two co-inventors—Yan Li and Gencheng Han—who are affiliated with the Institute of Military Cognition and Brain Sciences, a division focused on neurological research and cognitive warfare under the Academy of Military Sciences.
The involvement of neuroscientists in a vaccine patent, at a time when COVID-19’s neurological symptoms were not yet widely recognized, has raised significant questions among U.S. officials.
A Growing Focus on Cognitive and Neurological Warfare
The Institute of Military Cognition and Brain Sciences is part of China’s growing effort to achieve “mental and cognitive dominance” on the battlefield. According to Elsa Kania, an Adjunct Senior Fellow at the Center for a New American Security, Chinese military strategists view cognitive interference—including the disruption of adversarial thinking and decision-making—as a key component of future warfare.
Kania, writing for Prism, a U.S. National Defense University publication, noted that the Beijing-based institute has been linked to efforts in psychological warfare and neural engineering. She highlighted research by a senior scientist, Zhou Jin, who has been involved in high-level defense planning efforts related to cognitive technology and brain science.
Questions From U.S. Officials
Dr. Robert Kadlec, former Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response under the Trump administration and a lead figure in Operation Warp Speed, was among the first to draw attention to the presence of neurology researchers on the early COVID-19 vaccine patent. In his report, A Critical Review of COVID-19 Origins: Hidden in Plain Sight, Kadlec described their involvement as “unusual for early vaccine research.”
He noted that their published materials offered limited data on COVID-19’s neurological impacts in test animals and questioned why neuroscience experts were engaged in vaccine development so early in the pandemic. Kadlec suggested that this could indicate prior knowledge of the virus’s neurological effects before such symptoms were widely documented.
COVID-19’s Neurological Effects Documented Later
Research from U.S.-based institutions such as Duke University and studies published in journals like Nature have since confirmed that COVID-19 can cause long-term neurological effects, including memory problems, stroke, and sleep disturbances. However, many of these findings did not emerge until mid to late 2020—months after the Chinese patent was filed.
Although some of the earliest documentation of these symptoms came from Chinese doctors in Wuhan, the study in question was published in April 2020—weeks after the patent had already been submitted.
Fueling the Lab Leak Hypothesis
This sequence of events is adding weight to the theory—long dismissed by some in the scientific community and political establishment—that COVID-19 may have been engineered or manipulated in a lab. Recently declassified documents have revealed that a group of scientists at the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) concluded in the summer of 2020 that COVID-19 was likely a genetically engineered pathogen and that the SARS-CoV-2 “spike” protein appeared to be a “chimera”—a blend of genetic material from multiple viruses.
That report, however, was not included in official government assessments and only came to light following Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests. The study also pointed to a decade-old Wuhan Institute of Virology paper describing similar virus manipulation techniques.
Congressional and Strategic Implications
Rep. Darin LaHood (R-Ill.), a member of the House Intelligence Committee, believes these findings reinforce the idea that China is pursuing a multi-faceted strategy to surpass the United States militarily and technologically.
“China has a plan to replace the United States, and they’re working at it every single day,” LaHood said in a recent interview. “The sooner we wake up to that, the better.”
While definitive proof of COVID-19’s origin remains elusive, the newly surfaced connections between military neuroscience research, vaccine development, and early awareness of neurological symptoms are prompting renewed calls for transparency and accountability—not only from Chinese authorities but also from international health and intelligence agencies.
