“Trump’s Religious Liberty Commission Launches with DOJ Support”

The newly formed religious liberty commission, created by executive order from President Donald Trump on May 1, held its inaugural meeting at the Museum of the Bible, signaling a renewed federal focus on protecting faith in American public life. Attorney General Pam Bondi addressed the Department of Justice’s role in the commission’s work, declaring, “Our Founding Fathers understood that every individual must be free to worship without fear, without coercion, and without government interference.”
Bondi emphasized that the religious liberty commission serves as a reminder that freedom of religion is a core American value embedded in the First Amendment. She praised the Trump administration for its proactive approach, noting that faith should not simply be tolerated in society but “embraced and celebrated.”
The presidential commission, which does not report to Congress, includes notable figures such as former U.S. Housing Secretary Ben Carson, television host Dr. Phil McGraw, and Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, who serves as chair. According to Patrick, he and Trump discussed the idea for the commission shortly after the 2024 election, believing “the time was right” to prioritize religious freedom issues on a national scale.
Over the next year, the religious liberty commission is expected to hold seven to nine hearings, with gatherings continuing into 2026. Patrick stated that the commission would seek input from faith leaders, constitutional scholars, historians, and legal experts who have been involved in significant religious liberty cases before the U.S. Supreme Court.
Bondi expressed confidence in the Justice Department’s ability to uphold these freedoms: “I can assure you that the DOJ will use every legal and constitutional tool available to ensure Americans can live out their faith freely, without fear.”
However, not all reactions have been favorable. Critics, including Americans United for Separation of Church and State, argue that the commission risks advancing Christian Nationalist agendas. The group’s president, Rachel Laser, said the event confirmed concerns that the initiative was more about promoting a particular faith than protecting religious freedom for all Americans.
Although the executive order establishing the commission does not mention Christianity explicitly, an accompanying fact sheet does cite anti-Christian bias and criticizes prior administrations for neglecting religious discrimination.
In remarks during the commission’s launch, Trump himself raised eyebrows by questioning the traditional interpretation of church-state separation: “We said, ‘really? The separation?’ I don’t know, is that a good thing or a bad thing?” He added, “You guys are in the White House, where you should be… we’re bringing religion back to our country, and it’s a big deal.”
As the religious liberty commission begins its work, its proceedings will likely spark ongoing national debate over how best to balance religious expression with constitutional boundaries.
